Experience the Phenomenal Wine and Mushroom Event

The Wine and Mushroom Event on March 10th.
One of the good things in life is that some things never change – The Wine and Mushroom Event is always fantastic and is the highlight of our culinary activities.  Jeff Emery of Santa Cruz Mountain Winery brings together up to 6 exceptional SC area wineries share their great wines with us.

Last year we moved the event to the Scotts Valley Community Center.  This year we are changing our approach to the food we bring to share.  We are eliminating the dinner part of the evening involving main courses or salads. We are planning an evening of wine tasting with continuous appetizers followed by delectable desserts.  As you all know, chocolate is n honorary mushroom; so Phred Molnar and Debbie Johnson will create a forest of chocolate fungi for our consumption.  Last year their fungi were fantastic and the highlight of the dessert table.  Many people were so impressed with the display that they were taking pictures before they were eaten.   Even with their incredible display of edible mushrooms, we will need more desserts.  Please plan to bring your own contributions to the dessert table.

The What:
A phenomenal EVENING OF SAMPLING WONDERFUL WINES AND FABULOUS FOOD.  We, the Fungus members, provide the appetizers and desserts.

The When:  Saturday, March 10th, 2012
The evening will start with appetizers at 6:00 pm.  And will continue with new appetizers throughout the evening...  Desserts will appear about 7:45.

The Where:
Scotts Valley Community Center, 630 Kings Village Road, in Scotts Valley  To get there take Hwy 17 to Mount Hermon Road exit, proceed about one mile on Mt. Hermon Road, turn right at the 5th light (about a block past the Nob Hill store), onto Kings Village Road.

The Cost:
Admission for members is $12 in advance or $15 at the door plus your dish to share.  Guest admission is $15 in advance or $ 20 at the door plus a dish to share.  Advanced payment must be received at least 3 days prior to the event.  Please send checks payable to the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz to Margaret Carpenter at 6447 Hidden Oaks Lane, Aptos, 95003.

What to bring:
This is a pot-luck so bring your favorite delectable appetizer, hors d’oeuvres, finger foods or dessert.  Ideally, mushrooms should be included but whatever you bring is fine.  As noted before, we are eliminating main courses, soups and salad courses. FFSC members planning to attend should bring huge quantities of food.  Each person in your party should plan on bringing food for 10-15 people.  It might seem like a lot but after three hours of munching on appetizers, there won’t be much left.  This amount of food will also allow the winery people to enjoy our food as much as we enjoy their wines.

Bob Wynn, our resident chef and food coordinator, will be available to collect the food and distribute it at the appropriate time.  Remember, the kitchen is extremely small and if possible bring your food completely prepared. For those using wild mushroom, please check the species list included in this issue.  Labels identifying the fungal ingredient must accompany each dish – no exceptions.

Plan to enjoy an evening of tasting first-class wines and foods provide by the Fungus Federation’s members and a number of excellent Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation wineries.
