February 2010
Mushroom ID Class
February 3, 7 pm First of 3 part series. Phil Carpenter will
be teaching a Mushroom Identification class, 7-9 PM on the first
Wednesday of the month at the Museum of Natural History in Santa Cruz (the “whale
museum”). He is asking interested parties to sign up much the same way
that you would sign up for a class in a junior college. That is, you would
sign up with the idea that you would commit to attend all the classes to get
the most out of the course. That will be important, as each class will build
upon the knowledge gained in the previous classes. In addition, as a culmination
of the classes, a field trip (foray) will be held to apply the knowledge gained
in the classes. The final foray will will take place on Saturday,
April 24, 2010. The class size is limited to 20, in order to accommodate the
room at the Museum. Please contact Phil Carpenter at SEND

Greg Gilbert brings us a coastal view of plant pathogens
and how they
shape our natural communities. Greg is a professor in the Environmental
Studies Department of
UC Santa Cruz. He is particularly interested in how fungal
communities vary vertically in the forest and how dispersal limitation
shapes these communities.
His work specializes in plants and fungi from the US and Latin America,
including California,
Panama and Costa Rica. |
PiPi Valey Sierra Campout
May Long Distance Foray - Date to be determined based on start of mushroom
fruiting.
This is a drive-in camp which includes the usual pit toilets, tables, firepits
and barbecues. Drinking water is also available, but no showers. Campers pay
for their own campsites, and doubling up is encouraged as it makes the whole
event much more social. There are no sites reserved for us, but we try to concentrate
on the back loop. Groups go out Saturday morning around 9 am. Saturday night
is the extremely fine Pipi Potluck.

or homebrew for an afternoon potluck. The park is about
a half block off Scotts Valley Drive on Civic Center Drive behind Intel and
next to City Hall. Bring a dish to pass for at
least 10 people, your own tableware (including a beer mug!) and a lawn chair
to lounge around in. There will be a BBQ available, running water, electricity,
